After too many years of looking creatively constipated in a variety of Hollywood mass audience entertainments, the star cut loose with a performance on par with his wild-man glory days with this Werner Herzog spin on a cop and a city lost in post-Katrina New Orleans. The title drew instant detractors in fans of the Ferrara/Keitel film, but this is very much its own animal, apparently titled more from producer ownership than any eye toward a remake. Released along arthouse patterns to much interest but less business than any given weekend of his usual efforts, the star nonetheless seemed rebirthed by the experience, as did many of his longtime fans.
