Altman's expensive and meticulously produced satire was badly received at the time by critics and not at all by audiences. Unlike most of the director's other work, it has not over time developed a much stronger reputation, but it does have its champions and is certainly of interest. Along with "Quintet," Altman's duo with Newman surely represent the star's most uncommercial pictures.
