Quentin Tarantino's long awaited project (his first since 1997) suddenly became object of considerable consternation due to his and Miramax's decision to split into two parts rather than release a three hour cut; damage control leaks quickly suggested the original was 4-5 hours. Still, with Miramax honcho Weinstein on record as saying the director helped build the studio and can basically write his own ticket, it remains a mystery why they would balk at a 3 hour release when summer popcorn fare like Bad Boys 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean were clocking in at two and a half. Regardless, the high energy of the advance look and the interesting cast held well for a solid project. The final result overcame the curse that cliffhangers on screen since the demise of the serial age have fallen prey to, and solid boxoffice seems to suggest that the move was a financially savvy one.
