A revenge thriller that started in an audaciously interesting anarchic style became increasingly ridiculous; by the time the end act rolled around, plausibility had long since departed and the few who saw both this and Eddie Murphy's reviled family comedy "Imagine That" were experiencing a bizarre sense of deja vu at the fadeout after the mass carnage that preceded it. Managed a heftier than expected boxoffice take, but Stephen King's placement of this on his top of 2009 list, along with his acting in "Creepshow," his direction of "Maximum Overdrive" and his hatred of Kubrick's "The Shining" show that he is considerably more useful as an author than as a cineaste.
