An enormous surprise boxoffice success that showed Hollywood what it had forgotten: namely, the existence of an older moviegoing audience. The dual Oscars for Fonda and Hepburn smacked of sentimentality and righting old wrongs (he'd never won and was desperately ill); their work was as professional and effortless as one would expect but far from their best.
